What is Gestalt Therapy?
A gentle, collaborative approach to personal growth and healing
Understanding Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt Therapy is a humanistic, person-centred approach to psychotherapy that focuses on your present-moment experience. Rather than analysing the past in isolation, Gestalt Therapy helps you become more aware of what you are thinking, feeling, and doing right now — and how these patterns may be affecting your life.
The word 'Gestalt' is a German term meaning 'whole' or 'pattern'. At its heart, Gestalt Therapy is about helping you see the whole picture of your experience and integrating all parts of yourself — thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and behaviours.
As your therapist, I work with you in a collaborative, non-directive way. I won't tell you what to do or what to think. Instead, I'll gently support you to explore your own experience and discover your own insights.
Core Principles
Gestalt Therapy is guided by several key principles that shape how we work together.
Awareness
The cornerstone of Gestalt Therapy. By becoming more aware of your thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and behaviours, you gain the power to make conscious choices rather than being driven by unconscious patterns.
Personal Responsibility
Gestalt Therapy encourages you to take ownership of your experience — your feelings, your choices, and your actions. This isn't about blame; it's about empowerment and recognising your own agency.
Contact & Relationship
We exist in relationship with others and the world around us. Gestalt Therapy explores how you make contact with others, where connection flows freely, and where it may be blocked.
The Present Moment
While we may explore memories and past experiences, the focus is always on how those experiences are alive in you right now. The present moment is where change happens.
Wholeness
Gestalt Therapy sees you as a whole person — mind, body, and emotions are all connected. We work with all of these dimensions, not just thoughts or just feelings.
How Gestalt Therapy Can Help
Gestalt Therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of difficulties and life challenges.
Anxiety & Stress
Gestalt Therapy helps you become aware of the physical and emotional patterns that maintain anxiety, supporting you to develop new ways of coping and a greater sense of calm.
Low Mood & Depression
By exploring what you're experiencing in the present moment, we can uncover unmet needs, unexpressed emotions, or patterns that may be contributing to low mood.
Relationship Difficulties
Gestalt Therapy's focus on contact and relationship makes it particularly effective for exploring how you relate to others and developing healthier patterns of connection.
Self-Esteem & Confidence
Through increased self-awareness and self-acceptance, Gestalt Therapy can help you develop a stronger, more compassionate relationship with yourself.
Feeling Stuck
If you feel trapped in repetitive patterns or unable to move forward, Gestalt Therapy can help you see what's holding you back and explore new possibilities.
Personal Growth
You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Gestalt Therapy can support personal development, greater self-understanding, and a more fulfilling life.
A Collaborative Partnership
Therapy is not something that is done to you — it's something we do together. I see our work as a genuine partnership, where your voice, your experience, and your goals are always at the centre.
I bring my professional training and experience; you bring your unique knowledge of your own life. Together, we create a space where real change becomes possible.
Every person is different, and I tailor my approach to meet you where you are. There is no one-size-fits-all in therapy, and I will always work at a pace that feels right for you.
