Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about therapy, sessions, and what to expect

If you're experiencing emotional difficulties, feeling stuck, or simply want to understand yourself better, counselling may be helpful. You don't need to be in crisis to seek support. Many people find therapy beneficial during times of change, stress, or when they want to develop a deeper understanding of themselves. If you're unsure, you're welcome to get in touch for a brief chat before committing to a session.

Counselling and psychotherapy overlap significantly, and the terms are often used interchangeably. Generally, counselling may focus more on specific issues or immediate concerns, while psychotherapy tends to explore deeper patterns and longer-standing difficulties. In practice, I work flexibly across both, tailoring my approach to what you need.

The first session is an opportunity for us to meet, for you to share what brings you to therapy, and for us to discuss how we might work together. I'll explain how therapy works, discuss confidentiality, and answer any questions you have. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with. The first session is also a chance for you to see whether you feel comfortable working with me.

This varies from person to person. Some people find that a few sessions are enough to work through a specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term therapy. We'll discuss your goals and review progress together. You are always free to end therapy whenever you choose.

Yes, with a small number of exceptions. Everything shared in therapy is confidential, except in cases where there is a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, where disclosure is required by law, or in clinical supervision (where your identity is always protected). I will explain the limits of confidentiality fully in our first session.

It's not uncommon to feel a range of emotions after therapy sessions, including sometimes feeling temporarily worse before feeling better. Exploring difficult experiences can bring up strong feelings. This is a normal part of the therapeutic process, and we'll work through it together at your pace. If you're ever concerned, please raise it with me — your wellbeing is always the priority.

You can contact me by email, phone, or text between sessions for practical matters such as scheduling. I may not always be able to respond immediately, but I will get back to you as soon as I can. Please note that email and text are not suitable for urgent or crisis communication.

No. As a psychotherapist, I do not prescribe medication. If I believe medication might be helpful, I may suggest that you speak with your GP. Therapy and medication can work well together, and I'm happy to liaise with your GP with your permission.

In certain circumstances, I can provide a letter confirming your attendance in therapy. Please note that I am unable to provide diagnostic assessments, medical reports, or legal reports. If you need a specific type of report, please discuss this with me and I can advise on the best course of action.

There's no special preparation needed. Simply come as you are. You might find it helpful to think about what you'd like to get from therapy, but this isn't essential — we can explore this together. Wear comfortable clothing, and try to arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in.

The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. If you feel that we're not the right fit, I encourage you to let me know. I won't take it personally, and I can help you find another therapist who may be better suited to your needs. Your comfort and progress matter most.

If having someone accompany you to the building would help ease your anxiety about attending, that's absolutely fine. However, therapy sessions themselves are conducted one-to-one (or as a couple for couples therapy). Your companion is welcome to wait in the reception area.

Waterford Business Park is accessible by local bus routes. The nearest bus stop is a short walk from City Enterprise Centre. If you're unsure about transport options, please get in touch and I'll be happy to help.
